Graduates Largest Class in School History
Norden, California, June 17,
2008 On Saturday, June 7th Sugar Bowl Academy held its
graduation ceremony at the Mount Judah Lodge at the Sugar Bowl
Resort. Jakob Baker, who is deferring college enrollment to continue ski racing, Nicole Baron, who will attend the University of Colorado, Boulder, Abby Gould, who will attend the University of California, Los Angelas Honors College, Anmaar Habib, who will attend the University of Vermont, Timothy Neal, who will attend the University of Oregon, Matthew Richardson, who will attend Rocky Mountain College, and Rachel Tucker, who will attend Denver University were all awarded diplomas.
The graduation ceremony was
framed against the backdrop of Mount Lincoln, Mount Disney and
the awe-inspiring Sugar Bowl Palisades. After an inspiring introductory address by departing Head of School Bryan Walker, Dean of Students and Incoming Head of School Tracy Wilson gave the address to the Senior Class. UCLA bound Abby Gould delivered a wonderful and inspiring speech.

Departmental Achievement Awards were given to the following individuals: Math, Frank Gibbs; Science, Lance Topper; English, Abby Gould; Foreign Language, Rachel Tucker; Social Studies, Carmen Fregulia; Fine Arts, Haley Meyer. The Athletic Award winners were Christopher Landsinger for J3 Outstanding Athlete, Carmen Fregulia for Freeride Outstanding Athlete, Gabby Anthony for Female Athlete of the Year, and Jake Baker for Male Athlete of the Year. Dr. Tricia Gibbs, a member of
the Sugar Bowl Ski Team Foundation Board (the governing board
for Sugar Bowl Academy) presented the Williams College Book
Award to Gabby Anthony. The Williams Book Award honors a junior
in the top five percent of his or her class who has demonstrated
intellectual leadership and has made a significant contribution
to the extracurricular life of the school. Gabby was also the recipient of the Student of the Year Award and received the customary standing ovation from the faculty, students, and attendees. Gabby was the 2008 Junior National Super G champion.

Margie Powell, a Donner Summit historian and story teller, delivered the commencement address. In a brief history lesson about the Sugar Bowl area, Powell remarked on the big shoes of Elisha Stephens, who was the first emigrant to cross Donner Pass, and Theodore Judah, mastermind of the transcontinental railroad, the SBA class of 2008 was destined to fill. In closing she read from the introduction of her book, "You are not alone; you are only the latest to cross Donner Summit." Mrs. Powell, who has been visiting and living on Donner Summit for over 30 years is the author of Donner Summit, A Brief History.
