SBA Students Clean Up Highway 40

Sugar Bowl Academy student-athletes spent a rainy Wednesday afternoon sandblasting graffiti off the granite that stretches along the banks of Old Highway 40. Using 800 pounds of sand donated by Truckee North Tahoe Materials, SBA students and staff removed twenty orange, purple, and green stenciled robots from the rock faces.

After viewing the colored spray paint marring the natural environment on Saturday, May 8, SBA students responded maturely by asking how they could clean up the graffiti and prevent further destruction of the natural environment. Jake Scannell, an SBA senior made things clear for the entire SBA student-body, “Stenciling robots on the granite of Donner Summit shows utter disregard for the natural environment that surrounds our school."

A phone call to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office led to an organized graffiti removal effort using a sandblaster rather that toxic chemical removers. On Wednesday afternoon, a small group of students marked off the graffiti areas with orange cones and were followed by a sandblasting crew comprised of several teachers and students who were able to easily remove the graffiti. The rock faces are now free from markings and the Sugar Bowl Academy community vows they will respond in a similar manner if the graffiti continues. Head of School, Tracy Wilson, concluded, “We are proud to the be the ones who’ve removed the unnatural markings and restored the beauty of our natural surroundings. We will continue to take such action if needed.”
