Thank you to all the parents who joined us for Parents Weekend. While I wasn’t able to be there in person, I’ve heard so many wonderful things and it sounds like everyone enjoyed connecting with our staff and students. Thank you for making the time to be part of our community and for helping make SBA such a vibrant place.

I have been enjoying students coming into my office and making their pitches for changes and updates. I have agreed to a SwagShop online for merch, all student designed, so please order a hat! The Student Council is working on how to manage the vending machines with healthy choices and profit sharing. The Journalism Club is organizing to provide a student perspective in each weekly update; keep your eyes open for their reporting on the upcoming projects in October.

Staff have been working new ideas into the fabric of the Academy Building. In the coming weeks please drop by to check out our mini Art Gallery and rotation of local artists, more information to follow. With Villager support the new acoustic treatment in Village Hall is being finally measured prior to installation. All these projects and ideas help freshen our campus and encourage participation.

All the best,

This Week

Monday, October 5

This Monday morning, October 5th, students will be joined by a special guest speaker for a conversation about youth, athletics, and substance use. Her seminar will focus on the realities and pressures young athletes can face, along with the risks associated with nicotine, alcohol, THC, and prescription medications. There will also be time for questions and an open, honest conversation.

Students, please come ready to listen, ask questions, and learn from someone who understands both the counseling and athletic sides of the conversation.

Muscle soreness after a workout is a normal part of the recovery process. Exercise, especially new or challenging movements can cause microscopic damage to muscle fibers, triggering inflammation as your body works to repair and rebuild.

While you can’t completely skip the repair process, you can make soreness more manageable and help your body recover:

  • Keep moving: Gentle activity like an easy walk, light cycling, or casual swimming increases blood flow and can help loosen stiff, sore muscles.

  • Try massage or foam rolling: Massage, percussive massage tools, and foam rolling can reduce muscle tension and stiffness while helping you feel more comfortable.

  • Prioritize sleep: Teen athletes should aim for 8–10 hours of sleep each night to support muscle recovery, growth, and overall performance.

  • Fuel and hydrate: Protein provides the building blocks your body needs for muscle repair, athletes often need more depending on their sport, training, and growth needs.

For hydration, a good starting point for high school athletes is drinking additional fluids before, during, and after practices or games. Hot weather, longer workouts, and heavy sweating can increase fluid needs. Athletes should drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until they feel thirsty.

Remember: A little soreness can be a normal sign that your body is adapting, but recovery is just as important as the workout itself.
